What's Summer Academy?
While our Head Start program is approaching the end of the 2018-19 school year, Community Action is preparing to open up Summer Academy in Rowan County for preschool age children 3 years to 5 years (under certain circumstances, we may be able to accept elementary age siblings who are in grade K-3).
We will operate beginning Monday, June 3rd, 2019 through Friday, August 2nd, 2019 6am to 6pm Summer Academy will accept local Department of Social Services Childcare vouchers as payment. Our staff can assist you with working with the local DSS to obtain a voucher to pay for Summer Academy. We also offer a low rate of $125.00 per week per student for those who are not eligible to obtain a DSS voucher for the summer. Food and nutrition is provided by the Summer Food Program. Each Summer Academy center is rated Five (5) Stars by the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education.
Summer Academy focuses on Literacy, Science, Technology, Art, Health and Nutrition. This curriculum is intended to maintain the child's educational growth from the prior school year and boost this growth for further success into the Fall school year. Summer Academy is not a 'summer camp' in the traditional sense. While there will be lots of play and field trips, Summer Academy has been designed by early childhood educators and advocates.
With the generous support of ApSeed Early Childhood Education, Summer Academy students will receive the wonderful ApSeed Seedling reader, which is designed to boost a child's literacy levels. Both Community Action and ApSeed are committed to ensuring that ALL children in Rowan County and beyond are reading at grade level by the Third Grade. Summer Academy is designed to help youngsters reach this important goal. In addition to intensive literacy instruction, Summer Academy students will also be immersed in 'Farm to Preschool' programming as students will learn how the food we eat is grown in the ground. You will be amazed to hear what your child has to say about each day he or she spends at the Summer Academy! All of our Summer Academy teachers are certified early childhood education specialists (many teach in our Head Start program during the regular school year).
